Erica and Charles are a splendidly silly pair who originally met through mutual friends in 2002. They kept running into each other at planned group activities like movie nights, wine tastings, and dinners out. Charles was interested right away, but he played it cool. He casually invited Erica to parties, and spent a lot of time hanging around people he had (mistakenly) thought were friends of hers, hoping to get additional chances to see her, while slowly working up the courage to make his move. The big day came about a year later, when Erica came to one of the parties Charles had invited her to, and he finally asked her out. Erica had just gotten involved with someone else, and had to decline. While he felt horribly rejected, she felt extremely flattered.
Almost another year passed before Charles went to (now-single) Erica’s birthday party. Remembering how sweet he had been to her, Erica knew she was developing a crush. It took a few more group activities before Charles asked Erica out again, but this time things went the way they were supposed to. Even Leeloo (Charles’ dog) knew it was for real. She would crawl under Erica’s couch to hide whenever Charles would prepare to go home…
The night before Charles flew off to see his family for Christmas last year, he took Erica out for dinner. He hadn’t packed for his trip yet, so Erica wasn’t so sure when he suggested that they take a drive afterwards, but Charles’ confession of his love of carpooling to work together, and of driving together in general, persuaded her. They passed by Counterbalance Park, and agreed that it was just so beautiful, they ought to stop and walk through. While theorizing about the lights together, Charles suggested that they sit on a bench for a moment. He got down on both of his knees, told her how he wanted to spend forever with her, and produced a large parchment wrapped box. Erica was confused as to whether it was an early Christmas gift or a ring box (it looked too big), so Charles had to open it for her. She cried while he spoke his beautiful words, and then gasped when she saw the ring! They hugged under the streetlight and lingered for a few minutes, Erica crying; Charles bursting with happiness. Erica literally skipped with across the street to buy Charles a latte (not as nice as a ring, but still). They drove home together, Charles finally packed, and then Erica dropped off her new fiancé at the airport!
The wedding will take place in New York in September, and I am beside myself with giddiness about sharing the day them…
